what I look at first when
a business isn’t growing
When a business says, “Growth feels stuck,” most people start by looking at marketing channels.
Social media.
Ads.
SEO.
I don’t start there.
Why channels aren’t the first problem
Channels matter—but they’re not where most growth problems begin.
Because if the foundation isn’t working, no channel will fix it.
It just spreads the issue further.
The first thing I look at: the offer
Before anything else, I look at what you’re actually selling.
Not just the product or service itself—but:
-
How it’s positioned
-
How it’s packaged
-
How easy it is to understand why it matters
If that’s unclear, everything else becomes harder.
Then: messaging
Next, I look at how the business is communicating.
If someone lands on your website or hears you describe what you do, is it immediately clear:
-
Who this is for
-
What problem it solves
-
Why it’s worth paying for
If that takes too long to figure out, most people won’t.
Then: the customer journey
From there, I look at how everything connects.
What happens between:
-
Someone finding you
-
Someone becoming a customer
Where are they hesitating?
Where are they dropping off?
Where is the experience unclear or disconnected?
This is where a lot of conversion issues live.
Only then: marketing strategy and channels
Once the foundation is clear:
-
Offer
-
Positioning
-
Messaging
-
Customer journey
Then we look at marketing strategy and channels.
Because at that point, they can actually do their job.
Most growth problems aren’t caused by a lack of effort.
They’re caused by a lack of clarity.
If your business feels like it should be growing faster than it is, there’s usually a reason.
